Lately I’ve been really into this whole God thing. Sure, it’s not a ‘thing’ to me, but I know it is to many and for the purposes of that single sentence referring to it as a thing is the best I could come up with. (I haven’t had much coffee yet, and there’s three small children and a puppy loudly “frolicking” around me. So, bear with me.)
So, I’ve been into this God thing… lately. Deep down, the most biggest thing I’m searching for is how to remain so strongly reliant on my God, our God, to turn lately in to always.
I read every blog I come across on my WordPress reader pertaining to Christianity. I share the memes. I pray. I search for ways to better serve God. Search for what he requires of me. Yesterday, I even out right asked someone, whom’s post was almost what I needed, what did God require from us, what did ‘being ready daily’ look like anyways.
Needless to say, it came as no surprise to me that when I read todays daily word prompt, witness, that the Christian definition is the first thought that came to mind. After all, I have been pretty into this ‘God thing’… lately.
What does witness mean?
I checked… it means, as a noun, a person who sees an event, typically an accident or crime, take place. Evidence or proof.
What does the bible say about being a witness? I checked into that too…
Acts 22:15, “For you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard.”
1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
Acts 1:8,”But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Matthew 5:16,”In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Honestly, there’s so, so, so much more. A simple Google search will provide the down low if you’re interested in further pursuing this topic. For the matter of my post though, these four summed it up pretty well for me… they started uncovering a little question I was looking for. “Okay God, you’ve got me, now what do you want me to do?”
He wants me to be his witness. To tell everyone what I have seen and heard. To honor Him in my heart, always prepared to defend Him with gentleness and respect. To share Him with every single person I touch daily. To let His light shine through me before others so that they may see His good works and give glory to our Father who is in heaven.
Pretty simple once it’s spelled out to you isn’t it?
I’ll be honest. I was asking, “what does being ready for His arrival daily really look like” in a pretty lazy manner. You see, I knew the answer was in the Bible…. but man is that a LOT of reading.
Can’t someone just cut to the chase and give me a cheat sheet already?
I won’t even lie, I was expecting to discover a list somewhat similar to this:
- Pray daily
- Read your Bible
- Act in the same way Jesus acted
- Love all others
- Eat your vegetables
- Don’t smoke, drink, do drugs, lie, cheat, steal
- Make your bed every morning
- Don’t wear white after Labor Day
- and so forth and so on
Yes, I wanted it spelled right out for me. I can see God sitting up on His throne high in the sky looking down on me, and just shaking his head. I was totally MISSING His point. Imagine I had received this list I was looking for… do you think it would have done me one single ounce of good? Not in the way God is expecting of me. He doesn’t want us to just follow some check list on ’10 Things to do Daily to Get into Heaven’. It doesn’t work like THAT!!!
Imagine something else for a moment, imagine that you are a parent. (For those whom this image brings pain, I deeply and sincerely apologize.) Imagine you are a parent and your sitting there watching your child. Your child! Now, think of all you would do to ensure they knew you loved them. Would you follow a checklist? Or would these things just come out of your natural love for them?
Imagine you are a spouse, a daughter, a son, a sister, a brother… what would you DO for the ones you loved? Would you need a checklist to make sure you were “loving” them?
So, why in the world would you need to follow a checklist to honor God? To LOVE God?
You don’t. When you take God into your heart you are filled with His love. Naturally. You will be drawn to the proper choices. All you really have to do… is listen.
So, that’s it. That’s what I have to say about the word witness. That one little silly word prompt is what God used to give me the checklist I had been searching for.
P.S. If you’re the person I asked about that post, I’m still looking forward to reading it and feel that if God puts it in your heart that there is someone, maybe lots of someones, that NEED to hear it…. even if I might not be one of those someones anymore. Besides, I’m betting there will be something in there that God wants me to hear as well!
For everyone else, remember, God already put that checklist in our hearts the moment we accepted Him into them. All you have to do is listen….
Until next time, keep the faith, by sharing it with others!!
